University of New Haven Bergami Center, an interdisciplinary building for multiple departments, sited adjacent to the campus’ main academic quadrangle, constructed to serve as a new central hub of activity. With five collaborative classrooms; a makerspace, a teaching auditorium with cinema function, and a live broadcast studio, the new center brings together essential components necessary for students to develop communication and presentation skills while they are exploring and understanding highly technical subjects.

A New Campus Gateway

Located at the east edge
of the campus with stunning views of the downtown, the new Bergami Center was an opportunity to define a new campus gateway.
Strategically positioned glass volumes at east and north entrances create an architectural statement that invites a new point of arrival at the campus and opens vital pedestrian routes.

The Bergami Hall weaves educational program with open, inclusive public spaces that encourage interaction between students.
Program Layout

The completed project connects the program between the new Bergami center and existing Buckman Hall. The space between
new and existing is used to create a new public knot for the campus - an open, light-filled atrium. The spaces surrounding the atrium have visual connections between floors, making the atrium a dynamic center and the heart of the building.

East Stair Design

The tall glass tower, visible from the highway, with strategically placed sun
shading, is designed to frame an extraordinary view of downtown New Haven.
Large glass landings at the stair feature break-out spaces with lounge furniture, creating connection points between students and professors.

Exterior finishes and fenestration placement studies.

Boxed Window Design

The flat brick facade of the north entrance stairway is broken by protruding boxed window form, enhancing
the relationship between
the inside and the outside.
Extending two feet from the main column line, design
of curtain wall wind support assembly assumed to be
the most difficult task of
the boxed window design.
Boxed window concept sketches and final construction document set details.
In collaboration with structural engineer and currtainwall manufacturer an elegant and visually non-obstructive framing scheme was developed. The secondary framing of beams and column members are configured in an orthogonal manner, connecting to the mullions which stretch from floor to floor and transfer the wind load to the primary structure.

Construction Observation

The team spent months preparing a design, working our way through levels of increasingly detailed development and technical documentation
which finished up by participation in Construction Administration phase, ensuring our designs were being built as documented.
